Our recent Chai Morning was more than just a tea-tasting event — it was a celebration of culture, community, and cognitive growth.
Many of our clients, who are living with brain injuries, often find that thinking becomes more concrete and less open to new ideas. Experiences like this help gently challenge those patterns in a safe, social, and enjoyable way — encouraging curiosity, conversation, and flexible thinking.
We began by exploring three classic chai spices — cardamom, cloves, and fennel. Each client had the chance to look at, smell, and describe them. This not only sparked conversation but also supported memory recall, attention, and language processing — key cognitive processes involved in recovery and rehabilitation.
Together, we talked about the origins of tea, tracing its journey from ancient China to the spiced, milky chai enjoyed around the world today. It was a great way to connect history, culture, and sensory learning.
Although many clients had planned to bring snacks, most forgot — but as we said, everything happens for a reason! It gave us the perfect excuse to visit our local Nepalese shop, where Hayley, Clare, and Anita explored the shelves for new and interesting treats.
We returned with an assortment of Bombay Mix, Gujarati Mix, Japanese Mochi, and Kaju Katli — a feast of colors and textures. Mark added some biscuits, and Anita delighted everyone with homemade pakoras.
As we poured steaming cups of chai, the room filled with warmth, laughter, and conversation. Everyone tried something new — some loved it, some weren’t sure — but everyone took part. The experience opened up discussions about travel, food, and memories of other cultures.
This session supported many cognitive functions — from social interaction and attention to sensory processing and flexible thinking — all while building confidence and community connection.
After the success of our Chai Morning, clients are already planning their next culinary adventure — exploring new tastes “from Everest and beyond.”
