If you’ve walked past our Canterbury hub today, you’ll have spotted our brand-new fundraising banner proudly displayed on the front of our current building. It’s a clear reminder of something urgent: Headway Kent needs a new portacabin – and we need your help to make it happen.

Why We Need a New Portacabin

Our existing building has served us well, but it has quite a history. Believe it or not, this portacabin was originally used as an office during the construction of the Channel Tunnel in 1988. Since then, it’s been repurposed many times and now forms the base for our vital brain injury support services.

But it’s showing its age. In fact, bits of it seem determined to part company with the rest of the structure – we sometimes joke that it’s held together with goodwill, tape, and the determination of our staff and clients! As much as we love its character, it’s time for a safer, more modern space.

Here’s why a new portacabin is essential:

• Accessibility – we need wide corridors and more toilets to properly support people with disabilities.
• Comfort – our current cabin struggles with extreme hot and cold weather; a new structure will provide better insulation and climate control.
• Flexibility – modern, adaptable rooms mean we can run more rehabilitation sessions, counselling, family support, and digital inclusion work.
• Independence – while we are based on a hospital site, Headway Kent is a charity, not an NHS service. We have to raise funds to provide and maintain our own building.

Our Vision for the Future

A new portacabin will allow us to create a welcoming, accessible, and professional space where people living with acquired brain injuries can rebuild confidence, connect with others, and access the support they deserve.

This is more than a building project – it’s about dignity, independence, and giving brain injury survivors across Kent the environment they need to thrive.
