Grants That Make a Difference: How Funding Helped Us Deliver Life Changing Courses

Date: 13th August 2025

This is the first in our new series highlighting the real impact of grant funding at Headway Kent. We begin with our transformative Living with Brain Injury courses – now changing lives across the county.

Thanks to generous support from the Thanet Community Small Grants Fund and the Philip & Connie Phillips Foundation, Headway Kent successfully delivered multiple Living With Brain Injury (LWBI) courses in 2024 – reaching survivors and families from across Kent.

These structured, supportive, and professionally facilitated courses offer so much more than just information. They provide a lifeline for adults learning to adjust to life after a brain injury. I hadn’t left the house in two years. This course changed that.”

What is the Living with Brain Injury Course?

The LWBI course is a 10 week group programme that supports survivors to:

  • Understand their brain injury and its effects

  • Develop tools to cope with emotional and cognitive challenges

  • Rebuild confidence and a sense of identity

  • Learn strategies for daily life, relationships, and self-care

  • Reduce isolation by connecting with others who truly get it

Each session is guided by trained staff with deep understanding of acquired brain injury (ABI) and mental health – and delivered with warmth, compassion, and patience.

Importantly, these groups are not clinical or intimidating – they are inclusive, empowering, and often full of laughter and lightbulb moments. People leave with more than knowledge: they leave with hope, friends, and new possibilities.

Why This Matters

For many survivors, the journey doesn’t end at hospital discharge, it starts there. The reality of living with a brain injury can be lonely, confusing, and overwhelming. Our LWBI course bridges that gap helping people move forward with dignity, understanding, and real, practical tools for everyday life.

Want to Help Us Run More Courses?

The demand for this course is growing across Kent. We are currently seeking sponsors, grant-makers, and kind-hearted donors to help us run more courses in 2025 and beyond.

  • A £2,000 donation could fund a full 10-week course for up to 10 people.

  • Sponsorship packages are available for local businesses that want to make a difference and receive recognition.

  • Community groups and grant-making bodies can help bring vital support to even more isolated survivors.

If you or your organisation would like to support Headway Kent to deliver more Living With Brain Injury courses, we would love to hear from you.
